Cloud Architecture captures the former HDB Headquarters in Bukit Merah, a building that once stood at the heart of Singapore's public housing story before the Housing & Development Board relocated to Toa Payoh. Today, it remains an enduring presence in Bukit Merah Central, its future uncertain as the neighbourhood around it has changed little over the years. Photographed beneath a dramatic sky, the clouds become a counterpoint to the building's steadfast concrete form—a meeting of nature's architecture and the architecture built by people.
The title offers a subtle play on the language of the digital age. While cloud architecture has come to describe the invisible infrastructure powering modern computing, this image turns the phrase back to its literal roots, juxtaposing physical bricks and concrete with the ephemeral clouds above. Together, they reflect the evolution of how societies are built—from homes and neighbourhoods to the digital spaces that increasingly shape our lives. At once a documentary photograph and a meditation on change, the image preserves a familiar landmark that may one day quietly become part of Singapore's history.
